Lance could not remember a time before he knew about King Arthur, the Knights of the Round Table, and the fact that he had been named for the most famous of them. The bluebell wood too had its place in this. It was his father who told him the stories, about the coming of Arthur, the beauty of Guinevere and her love of Lancelot. At first the stories were from a big book called the Morte D’Arthur, but then they came from poems, poems called the Idylls of the King written by a man named Tennyson, which was his father’s surname and, as he learned, his own.

In adolescence, thinking back, he remembered being in bed, fingers twitching the sheets, his father’s face above him uttering passionately words he did not quite understand—honour, chivalry—and phrases that stayed in his mind even though he did not understand their meaning—‘live pure, speak true, right wrong, follow the King—else, wherefore born?’ There was nothing in the poems about a bluebell wood, yet when he closed his eyes after the readings he quite distinctly saw himself, Lancelot, riding with Guinevere, dismounting at a stile, then walking hand in hand with her down a grassy path to the dimness of a wood carpeted with bluebells. . .And when he opened his eyes the words flowed round him still:
